I Would Love A Bearded Collie
Q: I'd really like to get a Bearded Collie but I'm a bit concerned about the amount of grooming that would be required. How often would they need to go to a groomer and what would I need to do in between visits?
A: Beardies are such lovely dogs but you are absolutely right, they do need a lot of grooming. The home care routine shouldn’t scare you too much though, it would simply involve brushing every day making sure to get rid of any debris and untangling any knots. Top Tip…Always use some spray before you brush, it will help to protect the coat and avoid breaking hair. I would use a FURminator Dual Brush and a good quality comb along with a dash of Julie Harris coat management spray. If you marry this with a 4 week visit to your local Groomers Spotlight groomer, you will easily be able to keep on top of the coat care at home. However, if you can’t cope, you have a choice as far as the hair cut is concerned, a good groomer will give you options and may suggest a shorter hair cut. There is no law that states that you have to have a long coat on a Beardie as long as you aren’t showing him/her. I hope this puts your mind at rest. They are beautiful pets and I’m sure you’ll enjoy the bonding experience that home grooming offers.
