Autumn Preparation for Dog Groomers

And just like that, summer is coming to an end and we’re officially into September.

The mornings are getting a little cooler, the evenings are getting darker and before we know it, we’ll be surrounded by orange leaves, muddy paths and dogs who somehow manage to come home from a walk looking like they’ve been rolling around in a puddle for fun.

For dog groomers, the change in season also brings a change in what our clients and their dogs need. Autumn can be a particularly busy time for coats, especially for dogs who love a good muddy walk and owners who would rather not spend an hour trying to brush half of the park out of them afterwards.

Wet weather can mean damp coats, more dirt, more tangles and, for some breeds, a much higher chance of matting. Paws can collect mud and debris, while longer coats can become a magnet for leaves, twigs and pretty much anything else they manage to find on a walk.

It’s a good time to remind your clients that grooming appointments shouldn’t disappear just because the summer heat has gone. In fact, maintaining a regular grooming routine throughout autumn can help keep coats manageable and prevent small problems from becoming bigger ones.

September is also a great month to check in with those clients who haven't booked their next appointment yet. Summer holidays, trips away and general summer chaos can easily mean grooming appointments get pushed back. Now that everyone is getting back into their usual routines, a quick message reminding them that their dog is due a groom could be just what your diary needs.

If you've got new photos, changed your opening hours, added new services or updated your social media, now is a great time to give your profile a little refresh. Your profile is there to help potential clients find out more about you and your business, so make sure it's showing off exactly what you offer.

Autumn is also a great opportunity to create some seasonal content for your own social media. Think autumn grooming tips, muddy paw advice, coat maintenance, before-and-after transformations and, of course, plenty of dogs looking slightly unimpressed about the return of the rain.

There’s plenty of content to work with, and it doesn't have to be complicated. Sometimes the simplest posts are the ones your clients actually need to see.

So, here's to September. New routines, fresh content, busy diaries and lots of very muddy dogs.

Because if there's one thing we can guarantee about autumn, it's that the dogs will find the mud.

And they'll make sure to bring it home with them.
