Breed History / Description
Another of the rich diversity of French Hounds, the large Griffon Fauve shares his place of origin in Brittany, and his rough red wheaten coat with the Basset Fauve. From the 14th century the Griffon Fauve was used for hunting wolves. As wolves died out, numbers of the breed declined but in 1949 a few dedicated enthusiasts revived interest in the breed. He is a relative newcomer to the show ring in the UK.
Characteristics
A brave hunter, adaptable and obedient, with strong scenting ability. Possessing good voice, freely used.
Temperament
Gentle, sociable, affectionate and friendly.
